I am talking about some web sites that promise to you they can block your criminal records and don’t let them be “visible” to some people when they run background checks on you, such as landlords, people hiring etc. Is this for real or just a scam?in case they are able to do so,is this even legal?
I live in the state of virginia btw

Your Opinion About Some Websites That Say They Can “seal” “clean” Your Criminal Records For A Fee?

There is no way they can offer to just block the records. This is totally a legal question. Each state has different regulations on what can be sealed/expunged and the types of crimes that can qualify. Some states have no allowances for this at all. Most allow for some types of convictions to be expunged/sealed only after you wait a period of time and only have 1 or 2 conviction. Here is a great article that walks you through the process and has links to each states individual regulations. . . http://publicrecordsearch. wordpress. com/…

If they can somehow get a court order to have the records expunged or sealed, it could be for real. However, you can do the same thing for yourself and it won’t cost you a dime. . . other than filing costs at court. . which is minimal. This reminds me of the agencies that advertise to get your credit card bills cut in half or have your interest reduced for a fee. Again, this is something that is relatively easy to do for yourself. All it requires are a few phone calls and a plan.

Knowing how the record systems work I can’t see it. You are talking about legal records. They may be able to look at your case and determine if you can qualify for some form of pardon and do the paperwork for you but it’s nothing more then you could do for yourself.
I put them in the same category as immigration consultants. They just make you pay for the honour of doing things for you that you could do for yourself for free.

These attorneys are advertising legal services. In most jurisdictions, certain crimes *may* be expunged. This is not an automatic matter and does not apply to all crimes.
Not all background searches are the same. Some search only convictions, some search convictions only within 1 state, and a few do a more intensive search. Nothing is ever truly “sealed” or made “invisible. “
